A man is shot by a Deputy Sheriff. Justified? In the midst of the national debate over policing and several controversies over local officer shootings, county residents voted to create an Independent Office to monitor the Sheriff’s Department. John Alden was hired last year to head the oversight of Sonoma County’s Sheriff Department and will be the guest speaker at the Thursday, May 25th with a social starting at 6:30PM and a 7 PM General Meeting of the Oakmont Democratic Club. The meeting will be in-person at the East Rec Center, and available over Zoom. Attendees are encouraged to bring their favorite snack and beverage to share.

John Alden was appointed as Director of the Independent Office of Law Enforcement Review and Outreach (IOLERO) by the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors at its August 9, 2022 meeting, and began serving in this position on September 6, 2022.
IOLERO is a civilian review agency that provides objective, independent audit and investigation of Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office complaints, proposes policy recommendations to the Sheriff’s Office and strives to strengthen the relationship between the Sheriff’s Office and the community it serves. The director oversees an office of 4.5 full-time staff and manages IOLERO’s operating budget of $1.76 million.
Mr. Alden is a veteran oversight practitioner with more than 13 years of experience leading and managing civilian oversight agencies. Alden served as executive director at the Oakland Community Police Review Agency from 2019 to 2022 where he led staff in independent investigations of allegations of police misconduct. Mr. Alden has a bachelor’s degree in mass communications and a juris doctor degree from University of California, Berkeley.
